Sex Trafficking And The Gospel

Sex Trafficking And The Gospel

In 2014 the U.S. State department put out a Trafficking in Person report where it was declared that “Thailand’s government was not even making efforts to comply with the minimum efforts to eliminate trafficking in the country”, which in and of itself as a statement is bothersome.

Most of the trafficking in Thailand involves sex workers and according to some reports 25% of these workers are children. While there are an estimated 600,000 to 800,000 human beings trafficked across the border each year, many of them remain in country.

Recently, I heard the story of one.

Let’s call her Phom.

Phom lived in the Northern Mountains of Thailand near the Laos Border. Her family was very poor and struggled to provide for their 6 children. Living in the mountains of rural Thailand didn’t provide a lot in the way of financial independency. Her father was a day laborer as was her mother and some days there was work for little pay, others days there was no work to be found.

Many days her and her brothers and sisters went with out food.

One day a man and a woman came to her village and offered her and a few other girls the opportunity to “financially take care of her family.” All she had to do was come work with them. They did disclose to her that it would involve prostitution, but that her family could be taken care of if she “worked hard.”

“There was so much pride in being able to contribute to help my family that even though many people saw this as a horrible thing to do, I saw it as a way to bring honor to my family and show my love for them. So I left my family and willingly sold my body because I saw it as a blessing to be able to give back.”

Lets pause for a second:

We often read horror stories of females forced into prostitution, having to be with 10-15 men a night, and eventually dying in their 20s from drugs, disease, abuse, or suicide. In some parts of Thailand there are 1000’s of females lining certain streets waiting for someone to pick them out of a line up. Yet here was a girl who saw prostitution as a way to show love to her family.

So she left with these two people, did unspeakable things, and eventually became a village recruiter looking to lure girls in with the same things she was promised.

Unfortunately for many, she was very good at her job.

One day one of the girls whom she recruited brought her a gift someone had given her. This gift could fit in her hand. It was a small colored cartoon type booklet from Campus Crusade for Christ.

In it the booklet said:

God loves you and has a plan for your life.
Man is sinful and has been separated from God
Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s love and plan for your life.
You can receive Jesus as Lord, be forgiven of your sins, then you can know and experience God’s love and plan for your life.
At that moment, she took the booklet, ripped it up and threw it in the trash because it brought back memories of when she was younger and a group of students from Campus Crusade visited her village and shared the Gospel with her people. They had handed out those booklets and she remembers reading it but her parents told her to throw it away.

So when she held this little booklet in her hand for the second time, she got this feeling that came over her that she didn’t like. It was a feeling of shame; a shame that she hadn’t felt since entering into this profession.

She dismissed it and tried to get it out of her mind.

God however wasn’t finished with her.

Not long after that, she was approached by a young woman who struck up a conversation with her. After chatting for a while, Phom said she had to go, but before she did, the young woman handed her a small gift and asked her to open it when she got home.

Phom went to work and that evening when she got home, she opened the gift and inside of it was a letter this young woman had written her testimony on, and a small colored cartoon type booklet from Campus Crusade for Christ.

This is my phone number – call me if you would like to talk again.
That night, in her room, Phom prayed to receive Jesus Christ as Lord.

She walked away from prostitution and into the arms of Jesus Christ. Now instead of leading girls into prostitution, she leads people to the Lord and now serves in full time leadership in campus ministry.

God desires that all men and women come to a saving knowledge of Him. How can they believe what they haven’t heard? How can they hear unless someone preaches to them?

God is making a difference in the lives of people here in Thailand.

The Gospel is the good news for All people. Continue to be in prayer for our Campus Crusade Team that shares the Gospel every day on campuses. Don’t just pray for them though, go and do like wise. The one thing we all need, is Jesus Christ. You who have Christ the hope of glory living within you, have all you need. Go and do likewise.
